Winds of Winter theory: Stannis Baratheon will WIN the Battle of Ice – Here’s why
With George RR Martin behind on his writing, Game of Thrones had to go on his future narrative plot points for the rest of A Song of Ice and Fire to complete the TV show. Of course, the 71-year-old author has said how there will be some differences in The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring from how they turned out in the show. And now a popular new fan theory reckons Stannis Baratheon will win the Battle of Ice in the books, despite his defeat and death in Game of Thrones.
The Battle of Ice is expected to take place between Crofter’s village and Winterfell in the opening scenes of The Winds of Winter.
Reddit user msg_me_anything argues: “Stannis actually wins his upcoming battle – It’s been in our face the whole time.”
They quoted from the books: “Then the towers by the sea, crumbling as the dark tide came sweeping over them, rising from the depths.”
And then argued: “Uh.. Towers (Frey) by the (marching into battle with) Sea (Manderly’s).”

The theorist continued: “Dark tide came sweeping over them, rising from the depths?
“As the Night Lamp theory so nicely explains, Stannis is using the snow in combination with the ice fishing holes as deadfalls and cover.
“His army bursts from the snow cover (rising from the depths) and hits them from everywhere as they falling victim to the deadfalls.
“This is going to be one ugly battle.”
They added: “While I don’t agree with the Night Lamp part of the Night Lamp theory, using the ice holes as deadfalls, and snow as cover is heavily hinted at.
“Jojen’s dream about the Ironborn attacking Winterfell is very similar in its imagery.
“That still doesn’t mean Stannis defeats the Boltons or doesn’t die, but I think they at least win in the Crofter’s village.”
While another ASOIAF fan argued in the comments: “I 100% think Stannis wins the Battle of Ice (beginning of Nightlamp).”

The fan added: “There is just way too much evidence.
“That said I think the quote you refers to the Battle of Blood that is going to take place in Oldtown.
“The unofficial names for the 4 battles that will start TWOW are: The Battle of Ice (Stannis/Freys), The Battle of Fire (Meereen), The Battle of Blood (Euron/Oldtown/Redwyne/Fleet), The Battle of [Steel] (Golden Company/Storm’s End).”
George RR Martin gave a big update on his progress with The Winds of Winter earlier this week.
Writing on his blog, the 71-year-old author admitted: “I am spending long hours every day on THE WINDS OF WINTER, and making steady progress.
“I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week.
“But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week. It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go.”
He added further down: “I can always visit Wellington next year, when I hope that both Covid-19 and THE WINDS OF WINTER will be done.”
