Anne Hegerty: The Chase star opens up on not having children ‘I’ve rather dodged a bullet’

The Chase: Anne Hegerty quips she won’t take player ‘home’

Anne Hegerty, 62, revealed for her, having children was “not really an option”, as she admitted she feels like she’s “dodged a bullet” with the whole parenting malarkey. The Chase star made the candid admission after she was beaten by an 11-year-old Scrabble champion during the ITV spin-off show, The Chasers Road Trip. The three-part series sees Anne join fellow Chasers Mark Labbett and Shaun Wallace to discover if they are really “as smart” as they think they are.

To be perfectly honest, I do actually feel I’ve rather dodged a bullet

Although she seemed a little peeved, she joked that she’s quite happy to “hand children back” to their parents instead of having her own.

In a recent interview, she said: “I used to mind that that didn’t seem to be going to happen.

“But to be perfectly honest, I do actually feel I’ve rather dodged a bullet.”

She continued: “If there’s a kid in my house, I’ll make sure they don’t stick their fingers in the electric sockets or break anything.

“I prefer other people to have kids and lend me them and I can hand them back.”

It comes after the quiz genius previously opened up on her autism and how it affects her relationships with other people.

She admitted she struggles with romance and said that finding love “doesn’t feel like something that’s necessary”.

But while the brainiac was being thrashed by a child on the hit spin-off program, Anne also had a few words for ITV bosses about a little editing issue.

She lashed out after editors tried to portray her checking out her co-star Mark in his swimming trunks.

But Anne quickly shut down rumours of a love affair with The Beast as she “does not do younger men”.

The 62-year-old, who is also godmother to Mark’s four-year-old son, cursed the scene which was filmed in Miami, and branded the editors “wicked” for the deception.

“Let’s not go there. I always say we’re not each other’s type and I don’t do younger men,” she told The Sun.

“I just looked over my shoulder at the sea and they cut in an image of Mark coming out.

“Mark was not actually doing that at that time. Editors are wicked. Producers just like to do that sort of thing.”

She admitted the debacle made her laugh as she rolled her eyes when it aired on ITV.

“I thought, ‘For God sake, now everyone’s going to think I have a crush on Mark.'”

But The Beast wasn’t the only Chaser flashing his goods on their America trip.

“I didn’t notice Shaun’s budgie smugglers!” Anne giggled, as Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace walked around in high shorts.

She said of the trim 60-year-old: “I suppose I’m just used to not looking at the boys.

“I wasn’t aware of it until everyone started pointing it out!”

The Chasers Road Trip: Trains, Brains and Automobiles airs Thursday at 9pm and is also available on ITV Hub.
