Bill Bailey: Strictly star talks far from boring Christmas after ‘surreal’ family incident

Strictly: Bill Bailey says ‘most of his clothes don’t fit anymore’

With Christmas only two weeks away, Strictly Come Dancing contestant Bill Bailey, 55, cast his mind back to previous years where he’s enjoyed the annual celebration surrounded by family. With coronavirus throwing a spanner in the works for 2020, we’re all forced to think back to happier times, and in Bill’s case, more “surreal” times.

In a recent interview alongside his professional dance partner Oti Mabuse, the pair chatted all things the Strictly as the extravaganza nears its end.

But when asked how he’d be celebrating to festivities this year, the comedian giggled as he recalled one specific Christmas that will be engrained on his memory for years to come.

“We tend to mix it up a bit,” he admitted.

“I get a bit bored with turkey!”

He explained that one year they opted to do a Hawaiian-themed Christmas but disaster soon struck.

“The dog got out and we had to chase him all around the street in Hawaiian shirts, waving a bit of ham, trying to entice him back.

“It was a very surreal sight,” he chuckled as the memories cam flooding back.

Despite her partner’s story of a chilly chase around the neighbourhood after their four-legged friend, it didn’t stop Oti from wishing for one of her very own this Christmas.

Revealing she was hoping to get a puppy this year, she also added that seeing her husband would be the “best gift”.

The pair will have spent seven weeks apart due to the BBC extravaganza, so time together is definitely on the cards.

“It’ll be just me and my husband [this Christmas],” she said.

“Usually, I’d fly out of England the day after Strictly finishes, but this has become my home. It’s grey, but everything on TV is very Christmassy!”

As Strictly heads into the semi-finals this weekend, Bill and Oti will be dancing the Tango to Enter Sandman by Metallica and the Charleston to (Won’t You Come Home) Bill Bailey by Ottilie Patterson with Chris Barber.

But the fact he’s made it all this way has left the actor totally stumped and lost for words.

“I’m still slightly stunned and dazed by it all,” he admitted to Radio Times.

“I didn’t quite know how it would turn out, except that I knew I’d try my best and listen to Oti.”

She added: “It’s really refreshing what Bill is doing and how he’s pushing himself. He’s showing that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover!”

And it seems the dancing groove has rubbed off on him, as he revealed he’d love to keep it up even after the show is all done and dusted.

“I’d love to keep dancing after Strictly,” he said.

“I really enjoy it and I hope that comes across. It’s just such a joyous sense of freedom and exuberance!”

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 7:25pm on BBC One.
