A Place In The Sun presenter Jonnie Irwin is believed to be enjoying a break away for his 49th birthday today. Earlier this week, he thanked fans for their supportive messages after announcing he has terminal cancer.

In his most recent post, he stood amongst a flock of sheep as he embraced the countryside two days ago.

He captioned the post: “Overwhelmed by your kind messages, not had the chance to read them all yet but I assure you I will.

“Yesterday I needed some headspace so I escaped to the country with my brother in law and his dog. It was a tonic.”

Ahead of his birthday, Jonnie recalled being told he has six months to live after finding out he has lung cancer.

He has since been told the cancer had spread to his brain and is now terminal.

Speaking to Hello! Magazine, the property expert said the diagnosis came after experiencing blurred vision in 2020 while filming.

He said: “Within a week of flying back from filming, I was being given six months to live.

“I had to go home and tell my wife, who was looking after our babies, that she was on her own pretty much. That was devastating.

“All I could do was apologise to her. I felt so responsible.”

Jonnie and his wife Jessica have three young sons together; three-year-old son Rex and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac.

The presenter decided to go public with his news as he felt like he was “carrying a dirty secret”.

He added: “I hope that by shaking that monkey off I might inspire people who are living with life-limiting prospects to make the most of every day, to help them see that you can live a positive life, even though you are dying.

“One day, this is going to catch up with me, but I’m doing everything I can to hold that day off for as long as possible.

“I owe that to Jess and our boys. Some people in my position have bucket lists, but I just want us to do as much as we can as a family.”

Jonnie went on to say he had decided not to tell his oldest son Rex he is terminally ill, in order to protect his innonence.

He explained: “We make fun of my hair – he calls it my ‘spiky head’ – but as far as he’s concerned, his dad is normal and why would I shatter that innocence?”

Jonnie has been inundated with support since opening up about his cancer news.

His co-star Danni Menzies shared a post on her Instagram page this week, writing: “You ledge @jonnieirwintv so incredibly brave to share you’re diagnosis with the world.

“A true inspiration to us all to cherish all the moments we can with the people we love.

“Love and laughs always to you and you’re gorge fam xxx.”

Laura Hamilton also wrote: “Sending so much love and respect to you and your family Jonnie. We all know how tough it has been for you to share your story… Hamo xxx.”

A Place in the Sun airs weekdays from 4pm on Channel 4.
