Piers Morgan says Kate Garraway and Derek Draper 'happiest ever' before coma

Piers Morgan has revealed that Kate Garraway and Derek Draper were the happiest they had ever been before he ended up in hospital with coronavirus.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 55, spoke out on the almost year-long battle Derek, 53, has faced with coronavirus, after he was put in an induced coma to hel his body recover, but doctors have warned he may never fully come round.

Piers told The Sun’s TV Mag: ‘We just hoped he would make a quick recovery, you know he [was] 52, he didn’t have any underlying conditions, and he’s still in a coma now.

‘It’s talked about that he may never come out of it, she doesn’t know, she’s living in this terrible limbo.’

Just a few months prior, Kate, 53, had won a legion of fans after her appearance on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, with Derek meeting her on the bridge when she came fourth in the series.

Piers added that the last time he saw Derek was at his yearly Christmas party in a pub, adding: ‘They were in all the papers because she was so hot from the jungle at the time. I’ve never seen them happier, they were going to renew their wedding vows. Then that happened.

‘Kate went from being on top of the world to being at the bottom of the world. My heart breaks for her. And it carries on breaking for her. It’s a nightmare for her.’

Derek has been in hospital since March 2020 and has been left with severe damage to many of his organs, including holes in his heart and problems with his lungs.

Kate recently opened up about how difficult it has been parenting their two children, 14-year-old daughter Darcey and 11-year-old son William without Derek.

The pair were also forced to spend their 15-year anniversary apart due to Derek being in hospital, with doctors warning he may remain in his coma forever.
