Prince Charles has spoken out about the arrival of his fifth granddchild Lilibet for the very first time.

The future king made a royal appearance at the BMW mini factory in Oxford on Tuesday and when asked about Lilli's arrival, he said it was "such happy news".

The 72 year old went on to speak about the impact of technology on future generations, including for his grandchildren.

He continued: "The development of technology like electric vehicles…is vital for maintaining the health of our world for future generations, something I am only too aware of today, having recently become a grandfather for the fifth time.”

"Such happy news really does remind one of the necessity of continued innovation in this area – especially around sustainable battery technology – in view of the legacy we bequeath to our grandchildren," he added.

Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, welcomed their baby girl on 4 June and paid tribute to both the Queen and Princess Diana with their little girl's name.

The Duchess of Sussex gave birth to Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor on Friday 4 June at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California, at 11.40am, weighing 7lb 11oz.

The couple have chosen the name Lilibet in honour of the affectionate family nickname of her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen.

"She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family."

Meghan and baby Lili are said to be "healthy and well" and are "settling in at home" at their house in Montecito, Santa Barbara.

A statement from their press secretary read: "It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.
