Sad significance of Charles choice of funeral seat and link to late mother

Followingthe Queen’s funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19 September a committal service was held at St George’s Chapel and her heir paid a poignant tribute to her with his seating plan.

King Charles III, 73, occupied the seat at the end of the row, which was the same one her late Majesty sat in during Prince Philip’s funeral service last year.

At the time of the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, Covid restrictions meant that theQueen was forced to grieve apart from her familyand a solemn picture of the mask-clad monarch was significant of the social distancing rules at the time.

The Covid restrictions also meant Prince Philip's funeral had only 30 guests allowed in contrast with the estimated 800 originally planned to attend – the same number present at the Queen's committal service today.

Royal fans took to social media to share their views on the emotional scene as one person said: “This is a powerful sight to see King Charles III sitting in the exact same seat the late Queen Elizabeth II was in only 17 months ago at the funeral of the Duke Of Edinburgh.”

“Such a sad & powerful sight to see King Charles III sitting in the exact same seat the late Queen Elizabeth II was in only 17 months ago at the funeral of the Duke Of Edinburgh,” said another.

A third added: “Poignant that King Charles is sitting in the same seat upon where Queen Elizabeth II sat for Phillip's funeral.”

While the state funeral service this morning at Westminster had 2,000 mourners attending, the service was a much smaller gathering with 800 guests including Royal Family members gathering at St. George's Chapel in Windsor.

Since his death in April last year,Prince Philip has been at rest in the Royal Vault – a burial chamber in the grounds of the chapel.

On Monday his coffin will be brought to St George's Chapel and he will be buried alongside the Queen.
