The One Show host Alex Jones struggled to contain her emotions as singer Sir Tom Jones said that his beloved wife Melinda Trenchard, who died in 2016, made one final plea for him to carry out her dreams after her death.

The heartbreaking conversation was too much for Alex, who is currently pregnant with her second child, and she cried listening to The Voice coach share his personal memories.

Sir Tom, 80, was married to Melinda for an impressive 59 years before she sadly died of cancer.

Following a heroic battle with the disease, Melinda died five years ago this April with her husband by her side.

Speaking via video link while Alex was on the BBC’s red sofa, Sir Tom shared: "My late wife Linda, she had lung cancer and she was passing away – I was there in the hospital room with her for the last 10 days.

"I said: 'My god Linda, I don't know what I'm going to do with myself because I won't be able to sing, I won't be able to get the words out.'"

The star explained that even in her last days, Melinda was more supportive than ever and gave him the strength to carry on without her.

He went on: “She said: 'You must. Don't fall without me, I've got to go but you don't.

"'You have to do what we planned to do,'" the It’s Not Unusual hitmaker continued. "And that was to move back to London.

"She said: 'I've just run out of time but you've got to go and do it now.

"'But when you get on stage think of me laughing, don't think of me as I am now – think of all the years we had together and that should lift you up' – which it does."

Alex held her chest as she fought not to sob at her guest’s heartbreaking words.

The presenter was overwhelmed by Sir Tom’s raw memories and continuing grief, but she thanked the star for being so honest on the show.

Sir Tom has often spoken of his love for wife Melinda and the enormous impact she had on his life and career.

In another interview with Jools Holland, who questioned the Welsh musician how much he’d been influenced in his new album, Sir Tom admitted loss had played a part.

"Songs take on a different meaning from experiences that you’ve had in life. So after living for 80 years, I thought 'let’s do an album with songs that I’ve collected over the years, but songs now, that mean more to me now than before'.

"I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall – the opening song [to the album Surrounded By Time] and my wife – God bless her – when she knew she had lung cancer and it was incurable, and I said: 'I don’t know what’s going to happen.'

"Because it happened pretty quick," Sir Tom explained. "…She said to my son Mark and myself, she said: ‘You two have got to mentor one another now. You’ve got to carry on'," the star added.
