Tom Holland Confirms He’ll Play Fred Astaire in Biopic

The Peter Parker of Marvel Cinematic Universe says in a press event for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ he will star in the forthcoming movie about the legendary actor/singer/dancer.

AceShowbizTom Holland will next learn to sing and dance for his upcoming movie. The actor, best known for his portrayal of Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has confirmed that he will play legendary actor/singer/dancer Fred Astaire in an upcoming movie for Sony Pictures.

The British thesp revealed his next acting gig during a press event for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in London on Sunday, December 5. “Oh, I am playing Fred Astaire,” he told The Associated Press. “Yeah, I am.”

The 25-year-old said he hasn’t read the script yet. “The script came in a week ago. I haven’t read it yet. They haven’t given it to me,” he shared. “Amy Pascal has the script. She FaceTimed me earlier. I was in the bath and we had a lovely FaceTime, but I will be playing Fred Astaire.”

The confirmation comes a few weeks after “Spider-Man” producer and former Sony chief Amy Pascal said in a recent profile for GQ that she wanted Holland to play Astaire in the forthcoming biopic. “There are very few actors working now who are versatile in the way that he is,” she told the publication in an interview published last month. She went on gushing about the actor, “And he’s the hardest-working person that I know.”

Other details about the Astaire biopic are currently unknown. A representative for Sony tells Variety that the project is still in its early stages.

In the same interview in London, Holland talked about playing Spider-Man and the right time to step down from the role. “I love this character more than anything. This character has changed my life. I have a relationship with my fans that is so wonderful. I couldn’t ask for it to be any better,” he said.

“But I want to do what’s best for the character,” the “Cherry” star continued. “If it’s time for me to step down and the next person to step up, I’ll do so proudly. You know, I’d love to see a more diverse Spider-Man universe, which would be really exciting.”

He added, “If I could be a part of that – if I could be the Iron Man to the next young Spider-Man or Spider-Woman, that would be great. But at the moment, all I have to think about is the character and what’s best for Peter Parker.”

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” opens in theaters in the U.S. on December 17.
