A Place In The Sun’s most awkward moments as fussy couples clash with hosts

A Place In The Sun is the Channel 4 show where Brits with big dreams of owning their own holiday home are shown around properties in their ideal location by experts.

Often it goes swimmingly, and in the final five minutes, the excited guests make an offer and begin a new chapter of their lives in another country.

Unfortunately, the visions of the guests and the presenters do not always match up and there can be very noticeable tension when property-hunters fail to be tactful.

Daily Star has picked some of our favourite awkward moments between the presenters and the sun-seeking Brits trying to buy a second home in the sun.

Ben Hillman vs Paul and Debbie

A Place In The Sun's Ben Hillman really struggled with hard-to-please Paul and Debbie in Spain's Canary Islands.

The property expert had a budget of just £115,000 to play with and unsurprisingly, he could not meet their high expectations for such a small amount.

In fact, they even refused to step inside one of the four properties Ben had lined up for them.

Taking them to view the £81,897 two-bedroom apartment in a pretty courtyard with a communal garden, Ben asks them: "What are you thinking?"

Debbie bluntly replies: "Shocking."

"Shocking?" echoes an appalled-sounding Ben. "That’s stopped me in my tracks, ok."

"I’m struggling to find anything to like about it," adds Paul.

Laura Hamilton vs Gary and Janet

Laura Hamilton had a bad time taking holidaymakers Gary and Janet around properties in Spain's bustling Alicante.

The couple had a budget of £140,000 and made it clear they had no interest in doing any renovations.

Before Gary even stepped foot inside one property, he told Laura: "It’s not blowing me away so far."

Fortunately, he did at least step inside but things only went from bad to worse.

Gary immediately pointed out there was "no window" in the kitchen and was appalled at the decor choice.

"It is outdated," Janet said as they both looked around in disgust.

Laura explained: "It’s a 42-year-old property. It’s been with the same family, it’s been their home."

This was not enough to sway Gary and Janet – but at least they did end up putting an offer on one of the other villas she showed them.

Jonnie Irwin vs Susan and Fred

A Place In The Sun's Jonnie Irwin snapped when a guest told him she couldn't make an offer on a property because the view from the second bedroom wasn't good enough.

Susan and Fred were looking for a home in sunny Palma, Mallorca where they could stay for seven months of the year.

They needed enough room for their four grandchildren to visit and initially seemed delighted with the two-bedroom townhouse and swimming pool.

But they then began to worry there was not enough space in the spare bedroom for bunk beds and Susan said the view was not very nice.

  • A Place in the Sun buyer left in tears minutes after stepping into property

Jonnie argued they could not find something for a better price and Susan burst into tears.

Susan said: "The bedroom wasn’t big enough to fit two bunk beds in.

"Also, the view from that just wasn’t great."

"I know I’m being really picky here," she said.

Pulling no punches, Jonnie hit back: “I think you are!”

He adds: "This time next year that house will be worth even more, that’s the thing.

"You ain’t gonna beat that, I can say hand on heart, you are not going to beat that home."

Ben Hillman vs Joy

In another tricky episode for Ben Hillman, he took Joy around a property in Fuengirola on Spain's Costa del Sol and she was anything but happy.

With a budget of £125,000 and a requirement for a minimum of two bedrooms, he took Joy and her partner John to Fuengirola and thought he was onto a winner.

Regrettably, he miscalculated Joy's reaction.

"Can we go?" Joy bluntly asked within seconds of viewing the interior.

Horrified, Ben said: "Oh my goodness, that was instantaneous. What’s happening? Talk me through it.”

"I don’t like it," the house hunter responded.

Joy and John ended up going back to England without putting an offer on any properties.

In another mortifying moment from A Place In The Sun, a man who appeared on the show with his wife dumped her and then asked the presenter to hook him up with a new Italian girlfriend.
