Alan Arkin Could Complete The Triple Crown of Acting with an Emmy Win

Alan Arkin’s illustrious career has spanned the silver screen, the stages of Broadway and now he’s taken a stab at the streaming medium. His supporting role in The Kominsky Method has earned him acclaim from critics and fans alike. Now, the Television Academy is recognizing his efforts with an Emmy nomination. If Arkin manages to take home a statue he will join an illustrious group of actors who have managed to complete the Triple Crown of Acting.

Arkin has taken home two Tony Awards, according to BroadwayWorld. His first win came in 1963 for his starring role in Enter Laughing.Ten years later he won a Tony Award in the Best Direction of a Playcategory. His second win was for The Sunshine Boys.

While Arkin’s broadway success was swift, it would take a fewdecades for the silver screen to get the memo. Arkin was first nominated for anOscar in 1967 for his work in The Russians are Coming. He didn’t takehome the prize. He was nominated again in 1969. In 2007 he received a win forBest Supporting Actor for his work in Little Miss Sunshine. Arkin wasnominated in the same category in 2013 for Argo. He lost to ChristophWaltz for DjangoUnchanged, according to TheLos Angeles Times.

Arkin is no stranger to the Primetime Emmys, ether. The well-decorated actor has been nominated four times before this year’s nod. His first nod came in 1967 for his work in ABC Stage 67. Arkin found himself nominated again in 1987 in the Oustanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Special. In 1997 he received a nomination as a guest star for his work on Chicago Hope. In 2003 he was once again nominated in the Oustanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie category for The Pentagon Papers.

Arkin’s most recent nomination for The Kominsky Method is the first time he’s been nominated in the Oustanding Supporting Actor in a Series category. This year also marks his 62nd year as an active writer, actor, and director.

Arkin has managed to truly shine in his role as NormanNewlander in The Kominsky Method. While he’s been rewarded for hisefforts, taking home the prize at the 2019 Emmy Awards will be no small feat.Arkin is set to compete against three actors from the critically acclaimedshow, Barry.Anthony Carrigan, Henry Winkler, and Stephen Root have all been nominated.  

Arkin will also be competing against Tony Shalhoub for his portrayalof Abe Weissman in the wildly popular streaming series, TheMarvelous Mrs. Maisel. Tony Hale, who plays Gary Walsh in Veephas also been nominated. Hale has already won two Primetime Emmy Awards for therole. His most recent win came in 2015.

How many actors have completed the Triple Crown of Acting?

If Arkin manages to complete the massive achievement, he will become the 25th actor in the history of the awards to win a Tony, an Oscar, and an Emmy. Helen Hayes was the first star to complete the trio. She received an Oscar for her work in The Sin of Madelon Claudet in 1932. In 1947 she won a Tony for Best Actress for her role in the play, Happy Birthday. Finally, she received her Emmy in 1953. She went on to receive another Oscar, as well as an additional Tony Award.

Al Pacino, famed for his role in Scent of a Woman, finished the achievement in 2004. Pacino was first acknowledged for his work in Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? in 1969 with a Tony win. He went on to receive a second Tony Award in 1977, before winning an Academy Award for his role in Scent of a Woman in 1993. In 2004 he completed the awards trifecta for Angels in America.

Glenda Jackson, a British actress, was the most recent Triple Crown of Acting winner. She received an Academy award in 1971 and two Emmy Awards in 1972. In 2018 she completed the trio with a Tony win for Best Actress in a Play for her role in Three Tall Women.
