Alex, 44, was on hand to host the last episode of The One Show for the week alongside former Boyzone star, Ronan Keating, 44. The pair were joined by music producer Mark Ronson, 45, and singer Shakira, 44, to talk about their latest collaboration. However, the Colombian-born pop star had signal difficulties and she wasn’t able to make an appearance for the majority of the programme. When the connection was re-established one minute before the end of the BBC show, the interview was cut short as Alex had to bid farewell to viewers at home.

With Shakira back on the screen, Alex told those watching at home: “Well, guess what guys? We’re going to try Shakira again.

“I’m sorry but there’s only a minute left of the show,” she told Shakira before asking her just one question.

“We did your video for your song, Don’t Wait Up, you were surfing in it and looking incredible. What does it feel like to be back because fans have been waiting for this moment for a heck of a long time?”

The pop star replied: “I’m extremely excited and I feel very inspired. I’ve been working in the studio non-stop. I feel like a horse running after so long and being in a box in a stable for so long.

“I feel now it’s safer to be in a room, in a recording studio with other collaborators, everything I had inside is pouring out in the shape of song.”

The Colombian-born singer was just about to continue when the presenter cut her off to bring the show to an end.

Alex had to speak over the top of her guest to ensure Shakira didn’t keep speaking as the credits started to roll.

“Shakira we’re going to have to stop you there,” the host said before addressing those watching the show at home.

“And we’ll see you on Monday. That was a race to the finish, wasn’t it?” she added as she looked at her co-host stressed.

Nobody has disrespected her like that

Taking to Twitter, fans were not happy as the outcry poured out over the abrupt end to the interview with the singer.

One wrote: “Oh honey you don’t treat a global superstar like this, she won’t be returning anytime soon after this.”

Another posted: “Nobody has disrespected her like that, ever, what a shame,” whilst a third remarked: “Cutting her off was so rude and disrespectful!”

A fourth shared a solution to the problem as they stated: “Hey, [the presenters] did not interrupt @shakira.”

“The show runs daily for 28 minutes only and Shakira was having WiFi problems throughout the whole interview. Avoid the drama and rudeness and request her back @BBCTheOneShow,” they continued.

Shortly after the show came to an end, the official Twitter account for the programme posted another apology.

In view of their 88,400 followers, a spokesperson wrote: “We love you @shakira,” followed by several heart emojis.

“We’re so sorry we couldn’t stay on the air any longer. Please come chat to us again soon #TheOneShow,” they concluded.

Shakira has recently taken part in another collaboration but this time, with the heir to the throne, Prince William, 39.

The Duke of Cambridge is set to write an introduction for an ecological book and the singer will also be writing a passage.

Entitled, Earthshot: How to Save Our Planet, a number of other famous faces will also feature in the literary work.

It revolves around Prince William’s global environmental competition in the hope more people will work to combat climate change.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
