Alison Hammond was ‘overwhelmed’ with emotion as This Morning surprised her with a huge celebration marking her 20th anniversary on the show.

The 47-year-old star – who started on the show back in 2002 after rising to fame on Big Brother – was surprised by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby surprised Alison when she was sent to her hometown of Birmingham to supposedly meet a Dosh on the Doorstep competition winner sharing her name.

Speaking via video link to her co-star, Holly said: ‘This is gonna be a specially good one today, because not only has she got the same name as you, but aren’t you in your home town as well?’

Then, the feed to Alison’s earpiece was cut, and with Holly explaining she thought they were having a ‘technical issue’, while they duo told the viewers what was really going on.

‘We have made everything up because the person we are surprising today is actually Alison herself as she’s been on This Morning for an incredible and wonderful 20 years,’ Phil smiled, while Holly added: ‘We have set up a whole morning for surprise. Josie and Kate Lawler are in the house waiting to turn the tables on her.’

She reached the door of the house only to be met by Josie Gibson and Kate Lawler – cue lots of excited screaming as the trio jumped and hugged while Kate let Alison know what was going on.

‘Normally you’re doing the surprising, today the surprise is on you! Happy 20th anniversary on This Morning! Congratulations Alison Hammond,’ she shouted.

The three pals then jumped into a waiting car, heading off to the next mystery location with the promise of unexpected guests and plenty of shocks to come as she arrived at a studio filled with family, friends and people from her past.

As well as packages recapping her career, there were also poignant video messages from the likes of Dermot O’Leary, Rylan Clark, Strictly Come Dancing star Aljaz Škorjanec, Rick Astley, former Big Brother host Davina McCall and even Alison’s teenage son Aiden.

‘It’s crazy that you’ve been there longer than I’ve been alive. That’s insane! I’m very proud of all you’ve achieved, your accomplishments, what you’ve done there and what you’ve got to come as well,’ he beamed. ‘Sorry I couldn’t be there! I’m excited to see you when you’re home! Love you!’

In the studio, Josie hosted proceedings with Kate joining as a live guest alongside other people from Alison’s past, including her former junior theatre workshop director Colin Lewis Edwards.

She was also treated to an amazing cake depicting the infamous This Morning moment she got in a spot of bother in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and had to run away from the local police.

Speaking as the TV celebrations came to an end, she said: ‘Thank you This Morning for giving me the opportunity, firstly. I am really overwhelmed by this, to be honest with you.

‘I’ve had the best 20 years, every day has been the best. Thank you to all the viewers for watching. All I ever wanna do is make you lot happy. That’s all I wanna do!’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
