Former BBC Breakfast star Dan Walker was left red-faced after an "awkward" social media exchange with weather presenter Carol Kirkwood.

The host, who quit last week for pastures new at Channel 5, couldn't help but point out a newlywed mistake to Carol, who recently got engaged to her mystery partner – announcing the news live on Breakfast.

Her co-star Sally Nugent remarked at the time: "I'm a little bit concerned about you this morning. I don't know how you're managing to stand up with that giant rock on your left hand, Carol!" as her co-star Jon Kay collapsed into giggles.

Glancing down at her hand, Carol joked: "Oh, that one? Thank you Sal! It is rather nice, I got engaged."

But it was Dan and Carol who became entrenched in an awkward moment.

Dan posted a Google screenshot showing various news headlines – and it looked like a cache error had given one article the wrong picture to accompany the headline, which read: "Yorkshire newlyweds turned away from honeymoon flight 25 minutes before departure."

Next to the article was a picture of Dan and Carol engaged in one of her "headlock hugs".

Laughing off the blunder, Dan joked on Twitter: "Well… this is awkward. Do you want to tell your fiancé or shall I @carolkirkwood?"

Carol thankfully found the joke equally hilarious, as she replied: "Dan!! I am still [row of laughing emojis]. What a hoot!!!"

Fans quickly chipped in to share their own giggles at the post, with one writing: "That’s amazing… imagine thinking Carol was from Yorkshire with her accent…"

"You've been very busy indeed!" another quipped, as a third fan giggled: "Love that you're more worried about Carol's fiancé than your wife."

It comes after Carol hit back at Dan over his initial response to her engagement, as he wrote: "Carol Kirkwood is the best of us.

"Delighted she has found someone who can handle her headlock hugs. Congratulations Carol."

Dan added at the time: "If you get married live on #BBCBreakfast can I come back for a one off? @carolkirkwood."

Which is when Carol fired back: "Dan!!! Cheeky!!! You told me you loved these headlock hugs!!! xxx."

Carol clearly saw the funny side, adding a string of cry-laughing and red love heart emojis to her post on Twitter.

And Dan clearly didn't mind those tight hugs either, as he responded: "They are the best."
