BGT comedian forced to tone down Simon Cowell jokes after star’s freak accident

Britain's Got Talent act Jon Courtenay revealed that he had to axe some jokes about Simon Cowell after his bike accident for his semi-final act.

Jon won the Golden Buzzer from Ant and Dec during his first audition, and even earned himself a standing ovation from all four judges.

Before winning his spot in the final during the show last night, Jon revealed he had to rewrite his act to take some cheeky jokes about Simon out of it.

Simon broke his back after falling off an electric bike in a freak accident in Los Angeles, meaning he had to pull out of the series this year.

He was replaced by Diversity star Ashley Banjo, who sparked one of the most complained about moments on TV after the group performed a dance which included references Black Lives Matter.

Talking to Metro, Jon said: "That was an interesting rewrite, I mean that there was a bit about Simon in there."

"I sort of mentioned the judges and Ant and Dec, just to sort of put a reference in there, but then Simon had his horrible bike accident so I put something in there about that, not taking the mickey but just referenced it."

He continued: "And at that point, we didn’t know that Ashley was going to step in so then they announced that.

"So I went back to the piano and computer and tried to get something in about that, it definitely keeps me on my toes."

Last night, judges Ashley Banjo, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden had to choose between Jon, Cherry and Belinda Davids and Jasper Cherry to go through to the final.

David, Alesha and Amanda chose for Jon to go through after he performed his own song called When I Was Boy, featuring "bad dad jokes" and cheeks one liners.

Despite cutting material out, Jon did reference Simon's accident as he said: "We were one judge down so thanks Ashley, cycling for Simon is unhealthy."

He also made a cheeky joke at Ant and Dec, singing: "My hair no longer grows just out my ears and out my nose. My forehead has now met my neck but no forehead jokes in front of Ant and Dec."

BGT continues next Saturday at 8pm on ITV.
