Corrie’s celebrity cameos as show turns 60 – Holly Willoughby to Prince Charles
Coronation Street celebrates its mammoth 60th birthday today (December 9, 2020) with an explosive week of dramatic episodes.
Over the years, the ITV soap has catapulted a number of actors to stardom, such as Michelle Keegan, Suranne Jones, Rob James Collier and even Denise Welch.
But in the 60 years that the soap has been on-air, a number of famous faces have made appearances either as themselves or as brand new characters.
And some have even been more blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameos, really adding to the drama on the cobbles.
So, as Coronation Street turns the big 6-0, Daily Star is taking a look back at all the celebrity cameos over the years.
Kicking off the list is Girls Aloud legend Sarah Harding, who actually became a regular character in a number of episodes in 2015.
She played the character of Joni Preston, the wife of now-dead character Robert Preston, who was played by Tristan Gemmill.
Joni first appeared on July 23, 2015 when she travelled to Weatherfield to find Robert, who was romancing Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) at the time.
She certainly made an impression, as she slapped Tracy, who later demanded an explanation as to what was going on.
A week later, Joni tracked Robert down again and demanded he sign over all of their assets from the restaurant they ran together to her.
She admitted their marriage was over and they parted ways, with her final appearance coming on August 3.
Spice Girl Mel B actually appeared on Coronation Street well before she was a household name.
The singing sensation played the role of Bettabuy worker Amy Nelson in 1993, though was uncredited at the time.
Speaking of her small role, she said on Loose Women in 2018: "Stacking shelves. There were no words involved, just stacking shelves. I loved it.
"I must have been 17. It was my first job and I loved it because I'm a big fan of Coronation Street."
Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield
Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield appeared as themselves when they welcomed Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Cambell), Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) and Rosie Webster (Helen Flanagan) onto the This morning sofas in 2018.
The trio of Corrie characters had been invited onto the ITV daytime show to talk about a recent drugs bust at Underworld.
Fame-hungry Rosie really made an entrance, as she turned up late but looked completely fabulous as she spoke to Holly and Phil.
Keeping it in the ITV daytime family, Lorraine Kelly made a small cameo as part of her 60th birthday celebrations in 2019.
In the hilarious scene, she was shot in the leg by an arrow fired by Gail Platt (Helen Worth).
However, Lorraine had previously appeared in the Corrie online spin-off Just Rosie, when Rosie Webster had a modelling gig on her ITV show.
She also played a police officer in a A Christmas Corrie, which was a Text Santa special.
Comedian Peter Kay has actually been on Coronation Street twice.
His first appearance was in 1997 as a shoplifter, who was supposed to be helping Fred Elliott (played by the icon John Savident) fix up the Corner Shop.
Seven years later, in 2004, he returned as a character called Eric Gartside, who took Shelley (Sally Lindsay) out on a date.
Coronation Street got a royal touch in 2000 when Prince Charles made a small appearance.
The Prince of Wales was involved in the show's 40th anniversary celebrations, when he visited Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls).
The cameo actually hadn't been planned, as Prince Charles had just been visiting Granada Studios with Sue greeting him on set.
But the moment was filmed and the Royal Family allowed it to air as long as the Prince was given credit.
Sarah Harding isn't the only Girls Aloud babe to make an appearance in Corrie, as her bandmate Cheryl cameoed in 2013.
However it wasn't an official episode, with the pop sensation instead appearing in a Text Santa special.
Cheryl starred in a scene with lookalike Michelle Keegan, who played Tina McIntyre.
The beauty chose Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) to go with her to a Christmas party after auditions in the Rovers Return.
However Cheryl's identity was mistaken by a number of people, with Sally thinking she was Rihanna, and Chesney thinking she was Myleene Klass.
The late great Cilla Black is another famous face who appeared on the cobbles as herself.
Back in 2013, she made a cameo after soap bosses had asked her "several times".
She starred in a scene with Norris and Rita Sullivan (Barbra Knox), appearing alongside them in the Rovers Return.
However it was actually a scene for her special, The One and Only Cilla Black.
In it, Norris and Rita didn't immediately recognise the megastar, who later described the experience as "a dream come true".
Peter Kay's pal Paddy McGuinness also starred in Coronation Street, appearing on the soap in 2015.
The comedian played the character of Dougie Ryan, who claimed to be the next Bear Grylls.
He took a number of Weatherfield residents on a camping holiday in Wales.
However the foraging trip, which also featured Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), Sinead Tinker (Katie McGlynn) and Chesney, ended in disaster.
