Countryfile’s Anita Rani on feeling ‘inadequate’ as young girl ‘Highlighted my failings’
Britain's Best Selling Toys: Anita Rani criticises Barbie dolls
While Anita Rani is a regular presenter on BBC’s Countryfile, she featured on Best Toys of the 80s over the festive period and revealed there was on toy which she couldn’t stand as it made her “feel inadequate”. Anita, 43, explained why the doll was not one she wanted to play with as a young girl despite being incredibly popular with others.
Anita remarked: “I’m sorry to be the Barbie hater but she didn’t represent me in anyway.
“If anything, she highlighted all my failings.
“My legs were never going to be that long, my hair was never going to be blonde but she just made me feel in adequate.
“She just reckons herself doesn’t she, Barbie? She’s like, ‘Hey, I’m Barbie.’”

Anita’s appearance on the series came over Christmas, when she was suffering from Covid-19.
Sharing a video her Instagram page, Anita told her 70,600 followers: “Happy New Year from me and Rafi.
“I had plans to have a photo of myself with an amazing message [like] ‘let’s manifest some amazing stuff for ourselves.’
“But the truth is, I woke up on the first of January feeling pretty down and pretty grotty after having Covid for the whole of Christmas.
“Thinking I could wake up and go for a long run and I couldn’t.
“I felt really tired and I have felt the same on the second and the third and then I’ve had crazy anxiety about the first day back at school today.
“So that’s real, and I thought I’d tell you something real about 2021. But the point is, I feel better now.
“We will get through whatever is coming through whatever is coming next.

“So Happy New Year, what ever 2021 throws at us we can do this. Next time I’ll wear something more glamorous for you.”
Anita is believed to be back on set filming Countryfile which will continue on Sunday evening on BBC One.
Meanwhile, the presenter is set to publish a “deeply personal” memoir later this year.
Bonnier Books UK have revealed Anita will open up on being the “brownest kid at [her] posh white school and the whitest kid in [her] brown life”.
Anita said of her book deal: “I am so thrilled to be publishing my memoir with the team at Blink and Bonnier Books UK.
“It’s been my passion project all through this crazy year of lockdown and I can’t wait to have people other than me read it next year!
“This book is incredibly personal and close to my heart. Essentially, it’s a letter to 16-year-old me, what I wish I had known and the wisdom on growing up that I hope might come in useful for others.
“I hope that all readers will enjoy and relate as I discuss growing up Northern and brown and talk about my identity and belonging, race, ambition, and overcoming barriers to find a new way to define who I am.”
Countryfile airs Sunday on BBC One at 7pm.
