Life and Death was a huge episode with many twists and turns as Dark started to build towards its conclusion. Although many fans have binged through the Netflix series, questions remain over this instalment as it was a pivotal one. Many viewers are keen for a recap and particularly the characters who didn’t make it to the end.

Who died in Dark season 3, episode 5, Life and Death?

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from all seasons of Dark

Katharina Nielsen

One of the most shocking deaths in Dark season three came in the form of schoolteacher Katharina Nielsen’s (played by Jördis Triebel), who went back in time to the 80s to save her son Mikkel Nielsen (Daan Lennard Liebrenz).

She failed to locate Mikkel after Ines Kahnwald (Angela Winkler) took him away for fear someone would try to take the child away from her.

Instead, Katharina managed to find her husband Ulrich Nielsen (Winfried Glatzeder) locked up in a mental asylum after he got trapped there in the 50s.

Katharina promised she would get her husband out of the hospital however her plans were hugely scuppered.

She tried to steal Helene Albers’ (Katharina Spiering) key card to break Ulrich out, but she ended up getting killed by the nurse.

Helene brutally murdered Katharina and dumped her body in the nearby lake, which brought things full-circle after Magnus Nielsen (Moritz Jahn) had mentioned the body of a dead woman floating in the same lake.

During the grapple between the two women, Katharina’s necklace with the St Christopher pendant came off and was discarded in the sand and would later be found by another character.

Sadly, Old Ulrich was left to spend out the rest of days in the asylum as he waited through the night for Katharina to come for him.

This death was significant as it saw another instance of family members killing each other with Helene unwittingly murdering her daughter.

Peter Doppler

Following the apocalypse Peter (Stephan Kampwirth) and Elisabeth Doppler (Carlotta von Falkenhayn) were living in a caravan.

Each day, they went to the decimated nuclear power plant in the hopes of finding Charlotte (Karoline Eichhorn) and Franziska Doppler (Gina Stiebitz).

However, there was no news and Elisabeth grew frustrated with her father and went back to their mobile home.

In a horrific twist, she encountered a man who tried to sexually assault but luckily Peter arrived back in time and fought the stranger.

Again, the attack saw both men dying with Peter giving his life for his daughter, who fled and later reunited with Young Noah (Max Schimmelpfennig).

Elisabeth had already encountered Young Noah, who confirmed Peter was going to die later.

Jonas Kahnwald

The biggest death came at the end of the episode when Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann) was killed by a future version of Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari) from world two.

The moment happened when Martha and Jonas found Eva’s (Barbara Nüsse) lair with the interwoven family tree.

As they spoke to Eva, she informed them Martha was now pregnant and carrying the child which would be the Origin of the knot.

Just when it looked like things couldn’t get even stranger, another version of Martha came along and shot Jonas in stomach.

As he died on the floor, Martha wept for Jonas in a scene mirroring the end of season two where their roles were reversed.

This suggested the final cycle was almost complete and things would end and begin again with the birth of Martha and Jonas’ child.

Along with these major deaths, the show also saw Claudia Tiedemann (Julika Jenkins) burying her daughter Regina (Deborah Kaufmann).

Claudia later met an older version of herself (also Jenkins) who tried to convince her to follow Eva, who she said was the light.

However, it was unclear whether Claudia heeded the words of her other self.
