Doctor Who star Pearl Mackie comes out as bisexual in emotional Instagram Pride post

DOCTOR Who star Pearl Mackie has come out as bisexual in an emotional Instagram Pride post.

The 33-year-old actress played the BBC sci-fi show's first ever female LGBTQ+ companion, Bill Potts, in 2017 alongside Peter Capaldi.

To celebrate Pride month, Pearl took to Instagram and posed for a series of pictures with a rainbow heart cushion.

She wrote alongside them: "Proud to be bisexual. Proud to be Black. Proud of all my LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters and everyone in between.

"We matter. You matter. Big love and nuff respect. Happy Pride everyone!"

Pearl's fans immediately posted messages of support, with one writing: "as if i didnt love bill potts enough already, knowing she was played by an LGBTQ+ actress makes me so so happylove u pearl!!!"

Another added: "I'll never forget confiding in you and thanking you for representing bill in doctor who and making queer women feel heard. You are an amazing role model, from one bi woman to another."

Meanwhile a third shared: "BICON HAPPY PRIDE."

Pearl joined Peter, 62, as his companion for his final season, before Bill went travelling around the galaxy with her girlfriend Heather.

While Bill was embraced by Whovians, Pearl revealed last year that she wasn't in a rush to reprise the role.

She explained to Radio Times: "I think I need more time, to be honest. I still feel quite close to Bill.

"I need to miss her before I want to play her again, you know?

"I think I need to [do that] and find a way to add to her story before wanting to go back and play her again."

Doctor Who is available to watch on BBC iPlayer
