Former Strictly Come Dancing professional Kevin Clifton was welcomed onto BBC Breakfast on Saturday morning. The dance star chatted to hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt about the upcoming 2021 Strictly quarter-final. He highlighted the quality of contestants on the BBC dance show this year, noting there could be some “unpredictability” in the last weeks of the competition. Taking a look at the celebrities remaining in this year’s Strictly, Kevin insisted Dan Walker could be in the running to win the series.

Kevin discussed the quality of the contestants in the current series of Strictly, saying: “The standard of the dancing has been so ridiculously high.

“But, also the leaderboard keeps swapping about,” he remarked.

He noted that there doesn’t appear to be an “obvious” frontrunner or anyone with more dance experience than the others.

The former Strictly pro explained: “Everyone’s level is high altogether and the leaderboard just keeps swapping.

“So, there’s an unpredictability about it and everyone’s very excited,” Kevin commented.

However, he also insisted dancing is “subjective”, highlighting how an engaging performance can be scored highly even if it features technical errors.

He explained: “Dancing’s so subjective, you like what you like. I always say if I like a dance enough, even if someone does something technically wrong, then I could still give it a 10.

“You know, if it’s really made me emotional in some way and touched my heart or if it’s made me really excited, for example.

“All art, and dance being our art, touches people in different ways. If you like a dance for any particular reason then you like that dance and there’s no one to tell you that’s wrong,” Kevin said.

He also chatted about who’s currently standing out to him as a potential contender to win the Glitterball Trophy.

Kevin remarked: “Rose is a big favourite with everyone, I think she really touches everyone emotionally.

“I think Dan has improved the most,” he added.

The dancer gave high praise to Dan, commenting on how he seems to have drastically improved his dancing in recent weeks.

He continued: “The thing with Dan Walker is that if it was a few weeks ago I’d have said ‘Oh, it’s getting to that stage where it might start to get difficult for him and especially he’s got Rumba coming up and things like that’.

“But, the last three weeks in particular I think Dan has danced really really well.

“He’s actually put a little bit of a cat amongst the pigeons because it’s not even like ‘Dan’s good for him’, it’s like ‘Oh actually Dan’s doing really well now’.

“So, he’s another one to contend with for the ones at the top end,” Kevin concluded.

The celebrity contestants will take to the Strictly dance floor once again on Saturday night for the quarter finals.

Dan and his professional partner Nadiya Bychkova will be dancing a Tango to Santa Maria by Gotan Project.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6:40pm on BBC One.
