EastEnders star Danny Walters reveals he was bullied over his weight as a child
EastEnders star Danny Walters has revealed that he was bullied over his weight as a child.
The actor – who portrayed Keanu Taylor in the BBC One soap – recalled a particular incident while speaking on My Time Capsule podcast.
He told Mike Fenton Stevens: ‘We were talking to these two girls at the time, on the sun loungers and I walk out and am like, ‘Hey,’ and they turned around and said, ‘Oh my God – who’s this ugly fat guy?’
‘I was like, “Woah” and my brother was like, “Hey, that’s my brother. That’s really harsh.”
‘I started crying and ran off.’
‘This is not what I wanted people to see me as – the funny fat guy.
‘So I was like, “I’m done with that”. At the time, I was like “I want girls to love me, I want girls to like me.” I think, at the time, when I was younger, that was probably the reason why I made that change.’
‘That was the pivotal moment that made me change.’
‘Training helps me to push myself, to only get better for myself.
‘Because I used to weigh 16 stone – I used to be big – there is a massive motivation behind what I do and the way I train because I never went to go backwards.”
Danny portrayed Keanu from 2017 until 2020. The character featured in a number of popular storylines, from his affair with Sharon Mitchell (Letitia Dean), to faking his own death with the help of Martin Fowler (James Bye) and Linda Carter (Kellie Bright).
Keanu made a brief return as part of the soap’s incredible 35th anniversary earlier this year.
