Emmerdale spoilers: Maya Stepney’s dark history exposed as star drops worrying hint?
Maya (played by Louisa Clein) has not been seen on screen for the last two weeks, but according to official soap spoilers she is going to return to Emmerdale next week and attempt to contact Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant).
After months of abusing Jacob into a relationship, she was finally arrested and carted off in handcuffs.
It was then David Metcalfe’s (Matthew Wolfenden) responsibility to inform the village of the crime she had been committing and everyone was horrified to hear what she had done.
Except for one resident , Dr Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) who acted shifty about the news.
Express.co.uk spoke to the actress who plays Maya at the British Soap Awards 2019 about her character’s storyline and why she has become the monster she is.
And she revealed how her past could have had something to do with the way she treated Jacob.
She was asked if Maya herself had been groomed and replied: “Has she been groomed in the past herself? That’s an interesting question!
“I don’t know, I don’t know, I do think that someone who is kind of entrusted by those actions probably had a damaged past. It’s been touched on a little bit in the story.”
Could this explain why she continued to pursue Jacob even though she knew it was categorically wrong?
The star also explained why the storyline was important: “It was an interesting storyline to tell because usually a grooming story, you think of a dirty old man and a young girl.
“To actually have a story where there is the reaction [to a storyline] where a lot of young boys or older people will say ‘lucky lad, lucky me’ and it’s fundamentally wrong,” she continued.
“What she’s doing is wrong and just because she might be a relatively respectable young woman and have a position of responsibility, it seems more respectable.”
Consider the nature of her character and the storyline she has had to play, Louisa said she has had a “very kind” personal reaction from the public.
“Everyone has been very nice to me,” she divulged. “To the character, they’ve hated me very rightly, so I’ve done my job right.”
As for how the storyline is going to end, soap producer Kate Brooks has said “the right outcome” will be shown.
Will Emmerdale explore Maya’s past?
Meanwhile, there are questions surrounding Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) and what she is going to do with her baby.
Apart being raped by Lee, a man she met on a night out in Hotton, viewers are going to discover the chef to keep and raise the child.
But there could be someone else who may step in and help her.
It comes after the actress teased the possibility of Victoria reuniting with Ellis Chapman (Asan N’Jie.)
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV.
