Emotional Emmerdale fans sob as Marlon Dingle walks down the aisle to marry Rhona

Emmerdale fans were left in tears on Thursday (11 August) after Marlon Dingle managed to walk down the aisle to marry Rhona Goskirk.

Marlon, played by Mark Charnock, suffered a life-threatening stroke earlier this year and has not been able to walk ever since, but he was determined to walk down the aisle on his wedding day.

His plan was looking unlikely during recent episodes however, as he collapsed and was rushed to hospital where he was then held overnight.

Marlon was released just in time for his wedding though, and his best pal Paddy (Dominic Brunt) hurled him through the doors of the church in his wheelchair just in time for the ceremony.

In tearful scenes, the pair's wedding guests watched as Marlon stood up and took his first steps since his stroke.

He made his way down the aisle to meet Rhona (Zoe Henry) and they soon made their vows, with Rhona telling her now-husband: “I Rhona Muriel Goskirk take thee Marlon Sebastian Dingle to be my husband.

“To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, and in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, til death us do part.”

The couple exchanged rings, and Marlon then declared: “I give you this ring as a sign of our marriage. With my body I honour you, all I have I share with you.”

Soap fans were left tearful at the wedding scenes, with many taking to social media to praise Emmerdale.

"Oh Marlon walking down the aisle… just so, so beautiful," one person wrote on Twitter, as another agreed saying: "Marlon walking down the aisle has to be the most moving thing I've ever watched on tv."

A third Emmerdale fan asked: "Please tell me I'm not the only one with tears when Marlon started walking down to Rhona?!"

"Aww Marlon walked down the aisle what a beautiful and moving sight," a fourth soap fan said.

The moving scenes come as actress Zoe recently revealed that Rhona won't be changing her name, as she doesn't want her character to be a Dingle – the same surname her off-screen husband, Jeff Hordley, who plays Cain Dingle, has in the soap.

Speaking to OK! and other reporters at an Emmerdale press event, Zoe said: "I said, 'Don't want to be a Dingle'. I don't want to be the same surname in the show as my real husband is. Anyway, my wish has come true as she doesn't become a Dingle."

Reflecting on Rhona's previous marriages to Paddy Kirk and Pierce Harris, Zoe said that not changing the character's name to Dingle was also fitting for Rhona. She added: "I thought long and hard about this, because she's never changed her name.

"She's always been a Goskirk. [Her son] Leo is a Goskirk. She has stayed the same and her mum is here now. I like the fact that she has retained her name. She's never changed her name to Kirk or Harris."
