Is There a New 'Last Week Tonight With John Oliver' Airing This Week?
The HBO host returned to his studio last week after more than a year spent in his ”Blank Void“
John Oliver weekly “Last Week Tonight” is back in its New York City Studio, and yet another Emmy richer. The series won Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the sixth consecutive time, and used the opportunity to extend one of its long-running (read: almost obsessive) jokes about Adam Driver.
As show writer Chrissy Shackelford accepted the award on-stage, she made sure to thank the “Star Wars” actor, saying, “He knows what he did, and we know what we’d like him to do.”
Once backstage, Oliver explained exactly why his team decided to give Driver an on-air mention at the Emmys. “His presence was felt throughout our script,” Oliver said. “We had said that we wouldn’t do the joke again, and we have done it again. And if he’s mad about it, that’s what we’re really looking for.”
So, will Driver make another surprise appearance on the show this week to give Oliver a piece of his mind? We’ll just have to see. But yes, there is a new episode of “Last Week Tonight“ on Sunday, September 26. Oliver will be in his usual time slot, at 11 p.m. ET.
Though Oliver was technically off on Emmys night, the late night host did make sure to get in his own tribute to comedian Norm Macdonald, following his death.
“No one was funnier in the last 20 years than Norm MacDonald in late-night comedy. If you have any time in the next week do what I did and just spend time re-watching the clips of Norm and Conan because it just doesn’t get better,” Oliver said while accepting the show’s latest award.
Oliver also gave a shoutout to Conan O’Brien on stage, but joked backstage that his respect for the fellow late night host only goes so far, after being asked if he’d share the Emmy.
“Conan? No, he can take them from my cold dead hands,” Oliver joked. “I realized I said I appreciated him, not that much.”
