Former Commons Speaker John Bercow has condemned the Government over its handling of the pandemic and described the coronavirus Test and Trace system as “shambolic at best and non-existent at worst”. Speaking to Good Morning Britain on ITV, he said: “This is a Government that doesn’t believe in accountability.”
Asked whether he thought Prime Minister Boris Johnson is the right man for the job, he replied that it is “in a sense a red herring”.
“If the Prime Minister is not going to demand the resignation of the (Education Secretary) after the exams fiasco over which he presided, if he’s not going to ask for the resignation of the Heath Secretary despite the fiasco over COVID which he has presided, manifestly he’s not going to resign himself,” he said.
“My critique of the Government is that they have had months and months and months of mixed and misleading messages and, frankly, doing press conferences offering scripted soundbites and televised addresses to the nation or taking to Twitter are no substitute for accountability.”
The comments infuriated GMB viewers who took to Twitter to blast the former Tory MP.
One wrote: “Appreciate GMB have a government boycott-sized gap to fill in their programming, but there are literally one million other recently-unemployed nobodies with no relevant authority on the issue of Boris’s leadership they could have gone to before John Bercow.”
And another: “GMB You have officially reached the bottom of the barrel.”
One viewer echoed: “Not a full quid that bloke, keep up the great guests, scrapping the barrel.”
One noted: “John Bercow? The man who tried to push his own agenda in Parliament. We are meant to take what he says with any moral?”
Others suggested the Speaker’s comments were a bitter reaction to him failing to secure a peerage this year.
One Twitter user said: “Can’t take Bercow serious, he’s seething he’s not in the Lords. Awwwwww shame.”
And another: “Awww someone didn’t get their peerage title.”
ITV also received some backlash for the interview.

One person said: “Your programme has hit rock bottom now. John Bercow! How can anyone even think about giving him air time.”
And another: “Watching the Shouty & Pouty Gutter Show is like watching a live version of the ‘News of the World’ and in what world is!
“I didn’t get a peerage Bercow, never going to say anything positive about the government, your show just gets lower and lower.”
