NBC’s hit La Brea made its highly anticipated return with season two in September as it followed seismic events in Los Angeles. Despite the many adorning fans tuning in each week many will be heartbroken to see the show not air in its usual slot.

La Brea focuses on the unusual events following the discovery of a mysterious time-travelling sinkhole in the middle of Los Angeles.

The series also followed the lives of the Harris family as they navigate survival after the residents and buildings were sucked into the hole.

With zero knowledge of how they ended up in the medieval land, the survivors were forced to work together in hopes of making it back.

However, after the gripping show returns to screens for episode seven, fans will be left twiddling their thumbs, as the La Brea will go on a lengthy hiatus.

The episode titled 1988 will be the midseason finale before it picks up again in January 2023.

Thankfully for fans, ahead of its debut, an insightful synopsis for 1988 was released.

It read: “A reunited Harris family leads the effort to rescue Caroline and stop the sinkholes from happening, only to face forces that threaten to tear their family apart.

“With Lucas’ life on the line, Ty accepts a challenge to win his friend a cure.”

After announcing La Brea would return in the new year, NBC promised: “Patience will be rewarded with an action-packed two-hour mid-season premiere.”

Although the network hasn’t specified a reason for the break, streaming services usually go on hiatus for viewership figures.

By delaying a show midseason, the series becomes in high demand which means more viewers are likely to tune in when it returns.

Viewing figures are a huge deal for bosses because it determines whether the show will be renewed for another season.

Network bosses are more likely to cancel a series with streaming figures.

La Brea isn’t the only NCB show to go be delayed for the new year as Station 19 won’t be back on screens until February 23.

This is the same for the medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy which will also premiere in 2023.

Fans can look forward to some major twists and additional characters when La Brea returns.

Ahead of the season two premiere, Executive Producer David Appelbaum teased: “We’re going to be putting characters in different worlds moving into season two.

“There are going to be a lot of unexpected surprises that will happen at the end of the finale that is going to put our characters in a lot of different places.

“But also, we’re going to retain a lot of what we saw in season one,” he told fans at Comic-Con Special Event [via Deadline].

La Brea season 2 returns to NBC on Tuesday, January 31. A UK release date has yet to be announced.
