'Lovecraft Country': Jurnee Smollett Knows 'Nothing' About Season 2
Lovecraft Country remains under a cloud of uncertainty. The series quickly became one of the top HBO shows following its 2020 premiere, scoring positive reviews for its chilling take on Lovecraftian stories and bold character performances. But it’s unclear if the show will return for another season.
With few updates since the series went off, fans have been left to speculate about what’s next. However, actor Jurnee Smollett admits that even she has no idea if there will be a Lovecraft Country Season 2.
Will there be another season of ‘Lovecraft Country?’ Jurnee Smollett knows ‘nothing’
Smollett, who stars on the show as Letitia “Leti” Lewis, was interviewing with Gold Derby when she was asked for a status update on the show. HBO has yet to renew Lovecraft Country, but Smollett believes there’s a lot more to explore regarding her character and many others.
“I think there’s a whole world of stuff we haven’t even touched upon with Leti and all the characters,” she explained. “I’m so curious to see how she would attack it. But I know nothing. I know as much as you do, sadly.”
She went into how much she cares for her character, adding, “I love Leti. And it would be a dream to be able to step back into her shoes and explore her again, but I don’t know.”
One of her co-stars believes another season will happen
In an early 2021 interview with Collider, actor Michael K. Williams (Montrose Freeman) said he’d be okay with “whatever the outcome” is. Still, he really does believe there will be another season of the show.
“I feel very hopeful that there will be a Season 2,” he shared. “I know that show took a lot out of me, so I can only imagine what the writers must have gone through for three years. I came in for eight or nine months, and that was the final part of the process for that.”
“In all actuality, Lovecraft Country took about three years to get it to the point where they were ready for the actors to come on set,” Williams continued. “It’s heavy stuff. It’s heavy lifting, and a lot of that lifting is done in the writers’ room. I do believe that there will be a Season 2, but when? Who knows.”
Creator Misha Green previously told Rolling Stone she had been in “talks” with HBO about continuing the show but that nothing was official. She also spoke to Deadline about what she’d like to see if the show was renewed. “I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of,” she told the outlet.
‘Lovecraft Country’ Season 1 ended with a bang
Remember, the first season of Lovecraft Country ended in the death of Jonathan Majors’ Atticus “Tic” Freeman. He had been trying to hijack Christina’s spell when she captured and killed him.
Majors confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Tic is really dead, but he would be open to returning to the role if writers decided to bring him back in some way. “But I’m very at peace with where it is now. I feel like we’ve really told something great,” he said. “That said, if they even creak the door open, I’d bang that b*tch down to get back into this world and play with this family.”
Well, we guess we’ll just have to wait and see if the show is renewed and go from there.
