Maya Jama admits she knows nothing about sport despite landing boxing show

New TV boxing host Maya Jama came out fighting when a fan took a swipe at her “laughable” knowledge of the sport.

The ex-Radio 1 DJ, who is now a presenter on streaming service DAZN, admitted she was no “expert” on the fight game.

But a fight fan told her: “@MayaJama’s lack of boxing knowledge is laughable.”

She replied: “Just gonna say this once lol I am a host… a presenter… I’m here to ask the experts questions live on tv… with producers in my ears and countdowns and timings to stick to.

“I enjoy the sport and never claimed to be a boxing expert so you can laugh from your sofa all you want hun.”

Viewers were KO’d by her honest response – and then declared her the winner of the social media sparring.

One said: “Round of applause for @MayaJama tonight. She might not be a boxing expert but as a host nothing less than a 10/10 for me.”

After hosting the Brit and MOBO Awards and a spell on ITV’s Loose Women, she co-hosted Peter Crouch: Save Our Summer last year and Crouchy’s Year-Late Euros show throughout the football tournament.

The pair have already been snapped up for a World Cup equivalent next year.

Maya will work on DAZN’s Matchroom Boxing UK coverage, with former world champion Tony Bellew among the team.

She told the streaming service’s website she is a boxing fan and “stayed up until all hours of the morning to watch fights”.

Aside from her sports presenting, Maya landed another new gig as the host of BBC's Glow Up.

She took over the role for series three from Stacey Dooley, leading the aspiring makeup artists through weeks of tough challenges.

The series aired on iPlayer earlier this year, but she's since been opened up to a global audience after the popular show was added to Netflix.
