The fifth and final season of Money Heist has finally wrapped filming and is expected to hit screens in the coming months. As fans wait for The Professor (played by Álvaro Morte) and his team to return for one last round on Netflix, recent speculation may have sealed who will survive the oncoming assault on the Bank of Spain.

Viewers remain convinced that Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) will be the sole survivor of the upcoming final season of Netflix’s Spanish hit, Money Heist.

Season four was released this time last year, and concluded with the shocking death of Nairobi (Alba Flores).

Meanwhile, The Professor welcomed an unwanted guest into his hideout in the form of ex-inspector Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri), holding the criminal mastermind at gunpoint.

As the lengthy hiatus between the series’ fourth and fifth instalments continues, fans have been predicting even more death to come in the show’s final outing.

The series is famously narrated by one of The Professor’s principal robbers, Tokyo, who joined the team at the very start of Money Heist’s first season.

Her voiceover throughout the series apparently confirms her survival, as she seems to be recalling the events well after they actually happened.

Unfortunately, this detail has left the rest of the cast with a huge question mark over their survival.

One popular theory claims that not only will Tokyo survive the upcoming series finale, but she will actually be one of, if not the only survivor of the second heist.

A particularly eagle-eyed fan recently took to Reddit when they realised the strange sequences immediately following Nairobi’s death could be a major clue towards the ending of the series.

After being shot in the head by Gandía (José Manuel Poga), Nairobi seems to wake up in some sort of strange afterlife.

Wearing a red dress and holding a flower in her mouth, Nairobi looks up to see the previously killed characters Oslo (Roberto García Ruiz), Berlin (Pedro Alonso) and Moscow (Paco Tous) are watching over her.

The Reddit user speculated: “The finale with Nairobi and the others who had passed pretty much confirmed it or that some kind of purgatory thing is happening.”

If the theory is correct, other characters could start appearing throughout season five in the aforementioned afterlife.

Once the final instalment comes to an end, the entirety of The Professor’s crew could eventually reunite in purgatory, leaving Tokyo the only one left standing.

They continued: “I think it means Tokyo is the only one left alive, telling the story after the events.”

Another fan also pointed out that Tokyo has had several near-death experiences throughout the series, so could be destined to survive the final heist.

However, other viewers argued the series originally intended to end with its second season, which neglected to offer any explanation for Tokyo’s narration.

There may ultimately be no real reason why Tokyo was chosen to recount the events of Money Heist.

Even so, many subscribers are still predicting one final twist when the last season finally comes around, with new episodes predicted to reach Netflix by the end of the summer.

Money Heist seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix.
