Mum shares easy hack to save time when moving house
Moving home is a load of faff. No wonder it’s rated as one of the most stressful life events, when you consider the palaver of packing up all your things, shifting them in a van, then sorting them out again at the other end.
We’ll happily take any trick that makes the whole process a tiny bit easier.
This hack fits the bill. It doesn’t completely eradicate all the annoying parts of moving house, but it does help to save a little bit of time and effort – and for that, we are forever grateful.
It’s the creation of mum Kat Lane, who shared her technique on TikTok.
Here’s what she does. Whenever she has to move house, she grabs a pack of colourful paper, then creates a colour-coded system.
Each colour corresponds to a different room in the new house, whether that’s the kitchen, the living room, the bedroom, and so on.
Then, each box of belongings is labelled with a piece of colourful paper, to match it to the room where it will need to go.
Kat then writes the specific contents of each box on the label, but the point of the trick is that you can easily spot where each package belongs with a quick glance.
She recommends sticking the colour code guide next to the front door, so everyone can easily identify a box’s location, and even putting small pieces of the relevant coloured paper to door handles, so children can help out.
‘On a separate sheet of paper, I pop on each of the colours and write next to them what room they go in,’ Kat said in the video.
‘When you get to the new house, pop that piece of paper next to your front door and also pop a piece of paper on each of the doors so everybody knows exactly what boxes go with which room.’
The trick is handy not only because it saves you the time of reading or remembering what’s in each box, but also because it helps out any friends or professionals who are assisting in the process.
Rather than having your pal come up to you every five minutes asking where you want something to go, they can just check the colour on the box. Easy.
‘This is an incredible idea and I’m honestly mad you didn’t tell me sooner,’ one person wrote in the TikTok comments.
