Mum turns her drab kitchen into a classic American diner for less than £500
Lizza Truby has always wanted to visit the US, but could never afford a trip.
So, in lockdown, she decided to bring America to her.
The mum-of-two managed to give her drab kitchen an American diner makeover for less than £500.
The kitchen, in Wrexham, north Wales, was completed just in time for Christmas, with pink cupboards, booth seating, LED signs, and secondhand vinyls.
Lizza made her own blinds and focused on upcycling old furniture to keep the DIY project within a tight budget.
Now, Lizza, her sons Nathan, 18, Parker, two, and her husband Lewis spent most of their time in the revamped space.
Lizza, 35, said: ‘I can’t afford to go to America so I thought I would bring it to my house; my son also wants to go to New York but we just can’t afford it.
‘I’ve done all of it myself; I made the blinds, the LED signs – everything.
‘Some of the furniture was given to us by friends and family so we just upcycled it and all the utensils were bought second hand or given to us.
‘We had been looking for a diner booth for a year when we finally found one on eBay for £280 so that’s what cost the most out of the whole project.
‘All together, we spent £500 and we absolutely love it.’
This isn’t the first DIY project Lizza has pulled off with aplomb.
Her youngest son’s bedroom is painted blue, yellow, red and green, while Nathan always had ‘funky’ bedrooms growing up.
But it’s the kitchen’s makeover that’s made it the family’s favourite place in the home.
‘We spend more time in that room than anywhere else in the house,’ said Lizza.
‘American music is what really inspired me; it drove me to look into what I could do with music and that’s when the diner idea popped up.
‘We spent three months completing the diner and we still want to add more.’
