A key line of dialogue from the most recent finale of NCIS: Los Angeles has sparked hopes that it may not be long before two of the show’s most prominent characters make their return to the series. Could season 13 feature a surprise appearance from Nell Jones (played by Renée Felice Smith) or Eric Beale (Barrett Foa) when it premieres on CBS this year?

Nell Jones herself hinted she could eventually return to NCIS HQ in Los Angeles in a future season of the popular spin-off.

After taking over the role of Hetty Lange (Linda Hunt) in her absence, Nell decided not to sign on as the team’s new Operations Manager.

Instead, the former Analyst decided to head to Tokyo with her boyfriend Eric Beale, who had been offered to take on an exciting new business adventure.

CBS then announced that both Felice Smith and Foa had exited their roles as series regulars.

However, TVLine has maintained the two stars’ departure from the show may not be quite so cut and dry.

In their video running down the pair’s final NCIS appearance, they pointed to an intriguing line from Nell which could hint towards her eventual return.

During one of her last scenes, she tells Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah): “I’ll be all alone.

“In Tokyo. With Eric. So, I give it six weeks max.”

Nell jokes that she may not be able to put up with her boyfriend for too long before she comes crawling back to the NCIS.

Despite its light-hearted tone, Nell’s farewell has at least assured fans she’ll be willing to come back to the States for the occasional visit.

TVLine speculated: “So hopefully we’ll see one or both again. Maybe in episode 300, coming up next season?”

Viewers are expecting big things from this impressive milestone episode, which will arrive towards the end of season 13.

Although NCIS: Los Angeles has retained most of the main cast from its debut season way back in 2009, there could be room for a number of surprise cameos.

On the actors’ exits, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill also hinted the series could eventually find a way to bring them back for a guest appearance.

He explained: “Both Renée and Barrett have been on the show a long time, and they’re both very ambitious individuals who have projects that they want to do on their own.”

“And we’ve been giving them time off to do so,” he added.

Gemmill’s claim the stars are simply taking ‘time off’ could indicate they’ll eventually return to their beloved characters at some point in the show’s future.

He continued: “It’s a good thing, in some ways, to have that little bit of unpredictability to the show. That keeps it fresh and honest.

“But also, like I said, we keep in loopholes so that we can bring people back.”

Of course, no one wants to see the couple break up, but Nell’s final words to Kensi could be one of those loopholes the showrunner was talking about.

NCIS: Los Angeles season 13 will premiere on Sunday, October 10 on CBS.
