Outlander is five seasons in and renowned for being the onscreen adaptation of a series of best-selling novels written by Diana Gabaldon. The Starz drama is largely fictional but is sprinkled with historical fact. Fans have spotted occasional mistakes – and this time it’s from season one and involved Dougal Mackenzie (played by Graham McTavish).

In season one, viewers were introduced to Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) who had been honeymooning in Scotland when she discovered her ability to time travel.

The English World War II nurse was transported from 1945 back to her exact location but in the 18th century.

While in the past, she met Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and the two fell in love. They eventually decided to get married so Claire could be considered Scottish, as her survival depended on it.

As the couple were getting to know each other, they spent the majority of their time collecting rent with Dougal MacKenzie – and this is where a fan noticed the error.

The viewer took to screenrant.com to expose the blunder, writing: “The entire MacKenzie clan gathers around for a trip to collect the rents from their tenants, bringing along Claire and Jamie.

“This doesn’t seem very out of place at first, but when Dougal is speaking to the villagers in the pub after collecting the rents, he brings Jamie front and centre – and Claire is horrified to see that he is using Jamie’s scars to elicit sympathy for the rebellion.”

The fan stated: “As he rips Jamie’s shirt to show his back and scars, Dougal’s back is to the camera and audience; we see that he is obviously wearing a white shirt with sleeves and no coat.

“Then, when he turns to face the camera once again, he is back into his coat; no white shirt sleeves are visible.”

Dougal was Jamie’s uncle, who was providing him with shelter after a price was placed on his head for a crime he didn’t commit.

The injuries were obtained after getting into a physical altercation with British soldiers when he escaped after being arrested.

As a wanted prisoner with a bounty on his head, Jamie was forced to hide out with Dougal because he wasn’t able to go home.

He was arrested at Lallybroch after refusing to hand over his rations to British Soldiers.

It was uncommon for a Scot to refuse as the Soldiers would arrive at Lallybroch expecting locals to give up the rations so they could have food, drink and sometimes shelter.

Jamie resisted arrest when he heard his sister Jenny Murray’s (Laura Donnelly) screams as their leader Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) threatened to rape and kill her.

This led to Jamie being woken up in prison after being knocked out.

The novels detail that, while in prison, he was brutally beaten after being accused of stealing – and then again after refusing to give in to demands.

During another beating, Brian Fraser died from a fatal stroke. Although this provided Jamie with the opportunity to escape, he was also blamed for Brian’s death and wanted for his murder.

Eventually, he was caught and sentenced to death by hanging at the Wentworth Prison. He suffered a great amount of torture from Jack Randall, who later confessed his love for Jamie after raping him.

Thankfully for fans Outlander wrapped up production in May 2021, and although a release date hasn’t been announced, viewers can expect season six in early 2022.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Starz.
