Strictly Come Dancing fans saw the first elimination of the series on Sunday night as Nina Wadia and Neil Jones left the competition. BBC viewers watched the pair take to the dance floor once again on Sunday night as they found themselves in the bottom two after receiving criticism from the judges. As a result, they had to perform again in the dance-off but weren’t able to do enough to keep their place in the contest.

The first elimination took place on Sunday night’s dramatic instalment of Strictly Come Dancing.

The judges’ scores from this week were added to those from last week, before being combined with the results of the viewers’ votes.

Once the total scores were added up, presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman revealed the lowest-scoring couples facing the dance-off.

They announced that Nina and Neil would be competing in the dreaded dance-off against Katie McGlynn and her partner Gorka Marquez.

Nina and Neil attempted to impress the judges with their Tango to Would I Lie To You? by Eurythmics.

Meanwhile, Katie and Gorka danced their Jive to Good 4 U by Olivia Rodrigo in a bid to remain in the competition.

After closely watching each couple perform again in the iconic Strictly ballroom, the judges revealed their verdicts.

Craig Revel Horwood was the first judge to cast a vote and chose to save Katie and Gorka.

He said: “Both couples clearly upped their game from the first time they danced. Nina, you got every step right.

“Katie, you really kept the energy up all the way through to the end with lots of retraction, but the couple I’d like to save is Katie and Gorka,” Craig announced.

Motsi Mabuse followed in Craig’s footsteps also choosing to save Katie and Gorka from elimination.

Before revealing her decision, Motsi praised both couples for the improvements they had made: “I really thought that both of you gave absolutely all that you’ve got.”

New judge Anton Du Beke was next to cast his vote and chose to save Nina and Neil.

“The one who upped their game and performed the best I think was Nina and Neil,” he commented.

With two votes to one, it was then up to Head Judge Shirley Ballas to decide who would stay and who would leave.

“This is one of the closest battles I think we’ve ever had in a dance-off,” Shirley said, before choosing to save Katie and Gorka.

As a result, Nina was booted out of the competition, but she explained she’d loved her short time on the show.

“It’s been really fun, thank you so much. [Neil] is incredible, thank you,” the soap star said.

Nina and Neil’s elimination comes after Anton branded their Saturday night performance “uncomfortable” to watch.

He said of their dance: “You made a couple of mistakes and whenever somebody makes a mistake it makes me go a bit twitchy because I’ve lived through those over the years and it’s slightly uncomfortable.”

Fans of Nina and Neil were gutted to see them leave the competition, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts.

@michellepryde wrote: “Had a feeling it would be Nina & Neil in the dance off. So so gutted for Neil #Strictly.”

“Disappointed with that, I like Nina, she was undermarked by the clowns, while Judi was way way overmarked #Strictly,” @jp_jasonpeter commented.

“Shame Nina went, think she had a lot more to give. The public are brutal #Strictly,” @DawnBly68 added.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6:45pm on BBC One.
