Over 120 world leaders are currently in Glasgow for COP26 to negotiate how they will tackle the issue of climate change. Sky News host Kay Burley spoke to Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Liz Truss, about the world leaders who had not turned up in Glasgow for the conference and how the UK planned to tackle climate change in their latest trade deals.

Truss grew infuriated with Burley as she was grilled over the details of her recent trade agreement with Australia.

Burley also demanded answers from Truss over why the leader of China had not travelled to Glasgow for COP26.

“20 odd percent of global emissions are from China, if the leader of China can’t bring himself to come to a conference like this which is trying to save the Earth, what does that say?” Burley asked.

Truss hit back: “Well there’s a very senior Chinese delegation coming. We’ve had commitments now from China on funding overseas coal.

“We’ve had commitments on reaching the mid-century target and of course, we’re going to be pushing them to do even more.”

“So you don’t mind that he’s not even coming?” Burley pushed.

Truss replied: “I think it’s a huge achievement that we’ve got more than 120 leaders here in the UK, I think it shows what Global Britain can do when we put our mind to it.

“I’m really hopeful that those leaders who are here and those who aren’t here are going to do what it takes to get the commitments we need.”

“Amongst those that are here are Australia,” Burley continued. “During the trade deal you did actually when you were the international trade secretary, you agreed to take out any specific mentions of the Paris Accord Agreement.”

Truss snapped: “That is complete fake news Kay.”

“So what is it?” the journalist demanded to know.

Truss explained: “There is explicit mention of that agreement in our trade agreement and what’s more, the Australians have committed now to a mid-century net zero target.

“Of course there is more to do but we have seen great progress.”

“The biggest exporters of coal are from Australia,” interrupted Burley.

Elsewhere in the interview Truss revealed France has been warned they have 48 hours to back down on threats made in the fishing licences row.

She told Sky News: “The deal hasn’t been done, the French have made completely unreasonable threats, including to the Channel Islands and to our fishing industry and they need to withdraw those threats, or else we will use the mechanisms of our trade agreement with the EU to take action.”

Truss added: “I want to work with the French in a positive and constructive fashion and we have made that very clear.

“But we can’t do that when there are these threats hanging over us, our fishing industry and the Channel Islands.

“I’m not remotely happy about what has happened as you can hear me say.

“I want to see this situation resolved. These threats are unwarranted and they are not the actions we would expect of a friend and ally of the UK.”
