The Good Doctor exit: Why did Osvaldo Benavides leave as Dr Mateo?
The Good Doctor season four had a two-part finale with the St Bonaventure Hospital team travelling to Guatemala for a medical mission. This is where Dr Audrey Lim (played by Christina Chang) met Dr Mateo Rendón Osma (Osvaldo Benavides) and it was clear from the start there was plenty of chemistry. They slept together while in Guatemala and Mateo was eager to commit to their newfound romance and so agreed to leave his life behind and move to California to be with Audrey.

Things appeared to be going well between Audrey and Mateo when they moved in together at the start of season five.
He even got himself a job as a surgeon at the same hospital as her so his future there seemed to be secure.
But in the fifth episode Crazytown, she informed Salen Morrison (Rachel Bay Jones) that Mateo was on his way back to Guatemala for an “urgent” medical mission.
Mateo left her a cute note saying that he would be back soon, along with a bottle of wine.
In the days after him going though, Mateo wasn’t replying to any of her calls and texts.

He then sent his ex-girlfriend Rosa to the hospital for treatment where she told Audrey how Mateo he “moves fast when he knows what he wants”.
She then explains how he would always go away for medical emergencies but then one time he just didn’t come back.
This put a seed of doubt in Audrey’s mind about her future with him.
At the end of the episode, she left Mateo a voice message saying: “If you’re coming back for work, I’ll see you
Thursday. If you’re coming back for me, don’t.”
Why did Osvaldo Benavides leave as Dr Mateo?
Actor Osvaldo Benavides first featured in the series four two-part finale and quickly upped to a season five regular.
This showed the creators of The Good Doctor had confidence in the character and had intentions to pursue the romance between Mateo and Audrey.
Sadly, it was recently announced Benavides would be leaving the drama after such a short amount of time.
As of yet, the Mexican actor hasn’t publicly explained the reasoning for his departure.
Given how he had been promoted to a season regular, it does appear it was his decision to go.

Despite this sudden exit, the show must still go on and will return next week.
