The Handmaid’s Tale season four ended on a jaw-dropping note which had fans questioning Serena Joy Waterford’s (played by Yvonne Strahovski) fate in the highly anticipated season five. Ahead of its release the actress recently hinted at the potential death of her character in the hit Hulu dystopian series.
Season four saw Serena arrested and awaiting trial in Canada for crimes and role in establishing Gilead.
She had initially made a deal to hand in her husband Frank Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) so she could have frequent visits with baby Nichole.
However, these plans backfired when the government representative Mark Tuello (San Jaeger) learned she too was involved in the state’s abuse.
They revoked her right to see Nichole and locked her up in custody next to her husband.
This is where Serena learned she was pregnant despite being convinced she was infertile.
The news of the pregnancy came as a huge shock to Fred and to viewers because back in Gilead, she had a Handmaid June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) who was forced to conceive for her.
The ritualised act, called Ceremony, required Fred to rape June, while Serena held her down.
Gilead defended this law by stating it was the reason their birth rate had drastically increased.
Season four also saw June successfully escape the wrath of Gilead and become a free woman in Canada.
There she was able to give a witness testimony and relay the trauma and abuse she had experienced at the hands of Fred and Serena.
Despite her emotional and convincing plea, she was informed Fred would receive immunity and in agreement he would give up inside information about Gilead.
However, by the shocking season finale, he was dead, after June hatched a plan to have him beaten to death alongside other ex-handmaids.
This left fans questioning Serena’s fate, as she awaited Fred’s zoom call unaware her husband’s headless corpse was hanging on a wall in Gilead as she thought he had landed safely in Geneva and was preparing to receive his immunity.
In a recent interview with L’Officiel MonteCarlo magazine, the actress was asked about her character’s potential permanent move from Gilead to Canada.
Yvonne answered: “I don’t think she wants to go back to Gilead, pretty sure she would be hung for her crimes of selling herself and Fred out to the Canadian government.
“Or they would make her a handmaid, now that she is, in fact, a fertile woman with child,” she added.
It wouldn’t be the first time a Commander’s wife was stripped of her privileges and forced to become a Handmaid.
Viewers witnessed this happen to Esther Keyes (McKenna Grace) who was a 13-year-old wife, she was forced to become a Handmaid as punishment for hiding fugitives in her home.
Thankfully for fans season five has been confirmed and it can be expected to air in summer 2022.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 is available to stream on Hulu in the USA and airs Sundays on Channel 4 in the UK.
