This Is Us has been such a success that in May 2019, NBC decided to renew the series for a further three seasons, meaning there is plenty more drama to come.

The fifth season lands on October 27 and the series will continue to follow the lives of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore).

The episodes follow the children of Jack and Rebecca – Kevin (played by Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Randall (Sterling K Brown) – who was adopted by the family.

The start of season five will see the siblings celebrating their 40th birthdays, and the first two episodes have been aptly named Forty: Part One and Forty: Part Two.

Fans will be pleased to hear season five will follow suit when it comes to the number of episodes, as there will once again be 18 parts to the new season.

Usually the episodes are all given unique titles, however the names for the new episodes are yet to be revealed by NBC.

Fans were thrilled when they found out the series was being renewed, and the NBC co-chairman, Paul Telegdy, suggested there was no particular end in sight for the show.

Viewers fell in love with the show’s concept as it follows different characters over a number of different time frames.

The series has received countless Emmy nominations and Screen Actors Guild Awards since it started airing. Creator Dan Fogelman Tweeted following the news of the season renewal, saying: “Three years ago, we were live-tweeting the premiere of our TV show, hoping someone, anyone might watch…Today our friends at @nbc picked up #ThisIsUs for THREE more seasons, bringing us to six.”

He went on to add how the show has received a huge amount of support, adding: “It’s also due to our impassioned, dedicated fans. Some days you guys hate Miguel, some days you guys love Miguel, but we ALWAYS love you.” Miguel Rivas (Jon Huertas) is Rebecca’s second husband in the series.

Each episode usually takes place in the present day, and it includes flashbacks so fans can delve into each character’s past.

Kevin and Kate were two of three babies born to Rebecca and Jack – their third triplet, Kyle, was stillborn and so the family chose to adopt a third child – Randall.

A sneak peek from season five has been uploaded on Twitter and it shows Kevin visiting his sister Kate, and he is wearing a facemask to depict life during the coronavirus lockdown.

Kevin reveals to Kate that his partner Madison (Caitlin Thompson), is expecting twins, and Kate ‘air hugs’ the pair, congratulating them.

Fans are excited to see what happens next, with one saying on Twitter: “Madison and Kevin are adorable! Can’t wait to watch the new episodes! Randall and Kevin are making me nervous!”

Fans in the US have previously been able to watch the series on Hulu, however this year the episodes will air on the NBC service Peacock.

The new episodes will air a week after their initial release on NBC, so if fans wish to watch the series online, they will be a week behind.

Fans in the UK will also be able to watch the latest episodes on Amazon Prime Video, and the upcoming episodes are said to focus on the coronavirus outbreak, and the poignant Black Lives Matter protests.

Actor Hartley has been teasing parts of the latest season on his Instagram account, saying: “The best plans you’ll have all year kick off 10/27!.”

Actress Metz spoke to Entertainment Tonight Canada about how season five was created in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak.

She said: “We as a cast were like ‘Oh my gosh, what if the show doesn’t come back this year? We don’t want to miss a whole season.’

“I have to say I have never felt more safe on set because of the protocols. There has been such a process and so much energy and time and money into making sure we are safe.

“We are absolutely full-on addressing what is going on in the country and in the world right now. The pandemic, of course, and then all of the racial injustice and social unrest that’s going on.

“I’m really grateful that we are because I think it’s going to enlighten a lot of people and create a conversation.”
