Who is David Portnoy? Founder of Barstool Sports

DAVID Portnoy is the mind behind the popular sports, pop culture and entertainment outlet Barstool Sports.

Portnoy, along with being the founder of the controversial Barstool Sports, is also a stock trader, often brought on by Fox News for business segments and controversies of his, often arising through his Twitter.

Who is David Portnoy?

David Portnoy is most famously the founder, and now partial owner and head of creative of Barstool Sports, the multi-million dollar media outlet.

After graduating from The University of Michigan with a degree in education, Portnoy then moved up to Boston, MA to work for the Yankee Group, and IT market research firm.

Portnoy was employed by the Yankee Group for around four years, before eventually leaving the company to focus on starting his own, Barstool Sports.

Portnoy started Barstool Sports to fill a gap in the sports industry he had noticed, specifically around the sports betting aspect of the industry, in which he was an avid enthusiast.

Barstool started as a print-only publication in the early part of the 200's with Portnoy self-distributing the pieces on the Boston public transport system.

It was around 2008 that Barstool went digital, in attempt to keep up with the increasingly competitive sports media business. It was in 2013 that the company went exclusively digital.

As the company grew in size and popularity, Portnoy shifted his business model to focus more on developing specific personalities in his business. IT was through this that Barstool was able to gain a significant and devoted following, specifically amongst young adolescent men.

Portnoy himself adopted the persona of El Presidente, a character both blunt and unapologetic, with a brashness that led to extreme popularity.

Is Barstool Sports controversial?

Barstool Sports and David Portnoy himself have been shrouded with controversial since the two's rise to fame.

Most recently, Portnoy had a tape leak on Twitter, where he is seen naked, holding a leash connected to a dog collar, attached to the neck of model Sydney Raines.

The two have confirmed that the act taped was in fact consensual, but the leaking of the tape has still led to some of Portnoy's stocks dropping.

Barstool also owns the podcast Call Her Daddy, which is both immensely popular amongst some women and has also been criticized by other women for being palatable and promoting common misogyny.

Portnoy is known for many controversies, mostly his expletive filled tweets from everything from the coronavirus to anti-unions.

Portnoy has had many blog posts be criticized for being misogynistic, with lewd and inflammatory comments towards women.

This brand of coverage, while criticized by some, has still remained immensely popular, specifically amongst the college student aged demographic.

Portnoy often can be seen on Fox News and his official Instagram and Twitter, as well as Barstool Sports.
