Warning: The following article contains spoilers from Yellowstone season four.

The season four premiere of Yellowstone introduced viewers to the youngest cowboy on Dutton Ranch yet, Carter (played by Finn Little). After the Paramount drama confirmed all of the Duttons miraculously survived the attacks of last year’s finale, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) may have finally found his successor.

Carter immediately warmed to Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in Sunday night’s premiere episode of Yellowstone.

Following the explosive attempt on her life last season, Beth ran into Carter outside the hospital.

He was waiting out his father’s death from a heroin overdose, and Beth quickly took control of the situation and acted as his guardian.

She later introduced Carter to her fiancé, Rip, and, after a brief argument, decided to take him on as a stall cleaner.

Beth and her partner both see a lot of Rip in Carter, and who better to take over the land than the spitting image of the Yellowstone’s current manager?

After tuning into the gripping premiere event on Sunday, many viewers came away with the same theory.

Carter already felt like part of the family during their touching dinner scene together and, given Beth’s infertility, adopting the young stray could be their only chance of raising a child together.

Twitter user Lilac posted a crying gif and wrote: “Literally me watching Beth, Rip and Carter having dinner like a little family.”

Molly Stimmel said: “I think Beth will take Carter under her wing.”

Finally, NotTheOne tweeted: “I’m combing every adoption center until I find my very own Carter.”

Of course, the icy cold Beth and her equally complicated future husband won’t exactly be the perfect parents.

In their first meeting, Beth offered Carter a cigarette after claiming he’ll probably be in prison in a few years anyway.

Plus, Rip nearly left his new assistant in the middle of nowhere after a heated spat, before he gave in and let Carter stay on the ranch for the time being.

Despite their unconventional parenting techniques, taking Carter under their wing could be the first step to starting a family of their own.

On Reddit, user IamCadenBaldwin predicted: “Beth is adopting this kid calling it now.”

However, as the season continues, there’s a strong chance Carter could butt heads with John’s favourite, grandson Tate (Brecken Merrill).

Twitter fan Richard said: “You know Carter’s gonna be a bad influence on Tate.”

Tate proved himself to be a worthy successor after killing an intruder on the ranch in the premiere.

Even so, Carter’s resemblance to a young Rip could be setting him up as a key component for the ranch in future seasons of Yellowstone.

Yellowstone season 4 continues Sundays on Paramount.
