Presenter Dan Walker continued his Tokyo 2020 Olympics coverage on the BBC and was joined on Saturday morning by former field hockey player Sam Quek for the live broadcast of the latest events. However, after interviewing Alex Yee about his latest win, Dan and Sam gave the athlete some advice for texting family and friends after his prospective wins.

It’s the eighth day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Alex Yee has taken home another medal, this time gold for Great Britain in the mixed triathlon relay.

BBC’s Dan Walker spoke to Alex and his teammates, Jessica Learmonth, Jonny Brownlee, and Georgia Taylor-Brown, after their amazing win.

Britain’s seventh gold came after Yee ran in the 2km run after overtaking France’s Vincent Luis in the bike stage.

Team GB finished 14 seconds ahead of the United States and France claimed the bronze medal.

After their win, Dan said to Alex: “When you won silver in the individual, you said you were just a lad from south-east London who is now an Olympian.

“You’re not only a silver medallist, you’re a gold medallist as well,” he continued.

“So the lad from south-east London has done quite well!”

Alex joked: “Yeah it’s been an alright week this week.”

The athlete spoke of his Olympic experience, saying; “It’s pretty surreal still and, to be in this position, and I can’t really put it into words.

“I think I speak for all of us, we all just see ourselves as normal people who work hard and enjoy our sport.

“So I think that just shows it’s possible for so many people out there.

“Just get involved and I hope we inspire some people today.”

Dan agreed, replying: “That’s it, isn’t it, inspiring the next generation.”The triathlon athletes nodded in agreement, with Georgia adding: “We hope we’ve inspired people today.”

Dan turned back to Alex to ask: “Just quickly, how many messages have you not responded to since you won your silver and now your gold?”

The athlete said: “I think I’ve made quite a big effort to reply…”

Alex was quick to correct himself, joking: “Well, actually It’s not an effort, that’s the wrong word for this!”

Jessica, Jonny, and Georgia all laughed hysterically at Alex’s casual blunder.

The broadcaster laughed as well, adding: “You’re digging a big hole for yourself there!”

“You’ve copied and pasted Alex haven’t you?” Sam laughed.

“They’ve been a brilliant support. Sorry, I’m waffling now,” Alex continued.

Though Dan thought Sam’s idea was a good one, telling the Olympian: “You need to take advice from Sam.”

The presenter continued: “Sam just said ‘thanks very much’ and copied and pasted it to everybody.”

Alex continued to joke with his teammates, adding: “I’ve been authentic with my replies.”

“You’ve probably got hundreds and hundreds of messages,” Sam said, later congratulating the team on their extraordinary win.

Alex previously won silver in Tokyo for the individual men’s triathlon.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics ends on August 8 and coverage continues daily on the BBC.
